Off off off with your head! Dance dance dance till you’re dead!

These days I’ve been struggling with a clothing problem I think nearly all of us experience- How do I dress professionally for work, maintain my own style, and stay warm? The first two issues are a pain in the butt, add in layering and the possibility of snow boots and it really gets difficult.

Last week, I was breaking in my new corduroys at work. Not a big deal, except they give me plumber butt- so no appropriate for work! It would have been fine for sitting in my office all day, except my boss asked me to join a meeting at the last minute. A meeting with executives, potential donors, and her business contacts. And my demeanor illustrated my uneasiness at being in a room with smartly-dressed associates while my tattoo (and more) hung loose.

*almost* work-appropriate

Cute, but not really work appropriate. And definitely ghetto booty tight. Uh huh.

young professional(ish)
Definitely better, I think.

I don’t really like it, but my job requires me to exude a certain level of professionalism. I hate business clothes, even business casual, but I have to wear it. So that means I have to learn to wear it while showing my personal style (whatever that is).

So here’s my attempt for today. Had to rock the high heels, because nothing makes me feel more in charge and confident than heels. Also, proper pants that cover my tattoo, bum cheeks and everything that needs to be covered. What do you think, lovely readers?

Product Review: Plush fleece-lined tights

Have you heard of these yet? They are opaque stockings, lined with fleece for extra warmth. About a week or so ago, dailycandy wrote about them and sent the shivering masses all atwitter. I heard about them right before that, while perusing the new items on shopbop.

Now if you have spend more than ten seconds here, you know that I HATE THE COLD. I mean, I hate it like democrats hate Sarah Palin. I hate it like republicans hate Sarah Palin. That’s a lot of hate. I had to have them.

I was impressed as soon as I touched them. They feel awesome- thick and luxurious and strong. The inside is incredibly smooth. When I put them on, I noticed the first slight issue with them. They run small. Now, they only come in two sizes- s/m and m/t. I’m 5’6″, weigh… a certain amount, and I went with the larger size. And they still felt short in the crotch! (heehee, crotch is a funny word. carrying on).

Undeterred by a slightly short crotch I wore the tights today. Yep, still awesome. I normally wear a pair of wool tights under a pair of opaque tights and the plush tights blew that combo away in terms of warmth. I also found that the longer I had them on, the less the short crotch annoyed me.

I got outside and the weather outside was warmer than normal but still very cool. And my legs felt fine. In the office, I didn’t need a blanket. Folks, that’s a friggin’ miracle! And they feel so nice on. I made it a point to try and stretch them and I think it helped the length issue a bit.

Final words? I’m going to live in mine until winter’s over. I’m going to buy more colors when they release them (fall 2010) and I will likely buy a back-up black pair. I think you should definitely look into these if you hate cold weather and you’re under 5’6″. Any taller and I’m not responsible for the frustration and grief of trying to get these on!

To see how opaque they are, look here, yo. To buy them, look here, fool.

I’ll keep kicking the crap till it’s gone…

I know that it won’t last, but the weather was gorgeous today. The sun came out, it wasn’t freeze-your-nips-off cold. It made my day. In fact, a coworker said that she hadn’t seen me this happy since, well… summertime.

So I broke out my new oxfords and added some ruffles. And the super-opaque tights? They’re the new fleece-lined tights from plush. I’m going to do a proper review, but in a word? buythem.

See my vest? Real Gorilla Chest!

vest- Zara, jeans- Martin & Osa, boots- Jeffrey Campbell

Actually, my vest is from a very rare and endangered animal called “polyester.” I’ve been aching for a fur vest for a while but never found one that was a decent price and looked good on me. And then Zara had a big sale :)

I was so excited to wear the vest that I left the house without even taking the tag off. whoops!

At the end of the night, no matter how much I intend to put everything away where it belongs, my jewelry always ends up in a pile in my living room.

Eye Candy: Haider Ackermann

Haider Ackermann came much closer to becoming a household name this year thanks to Twilda Swinton wearing one of his pieces on the red carpet.

I had seen his stuff before and enjoyed it, and I wanted to feature his designs now. This post is especially timely for me because of his impeccable ability to layer and drape fabrics. It’s freaking cold here and I need some beautiful eye candy to remind me that it is possible to look chic and stay warm(ish) in the cold air here.

oh! I’ve added some items to my online shop. Why not saunter over and part ways with some of your cash? There’ll be plenty more added in the next weeks.

What I Wore

Plenty of bloggers have been posting retrospectives of their outfits throughout the year. When I think about it, it’s a really great way to see how my style has evolved. Although this blog is only a few months old, I’ve been blogging for more than a year (originally on a different blog), and I know that my style has changed so much since I first started.

Join me, won’t you, on a journey?

Who’s Got Style? We Do We Do!

So nearly a full month after, I am finally writing about the Boston Fashion Blogger Mixer. So many of the other girls who attended wrote up great reviews but I wanted to share some words on how much fun it was and let everyone know that my blogroll now includes the lovely bloggers I met at the mixer.

So, there are times in my life when I am painfully shy and I was completely expecting this to be one of those times. A room full of gorgeous, well-dressed fashion bloggers who probably all know each other and are great friends? I was definitely anxious. However, while everyone there was gorgeous and well-dressed, they were also super friendly and eager to chat. Many confessed to feeling as nervous as I did. But the vibe (and the liquor) put everyone at ease.

Here are some pictures from the Boston Fashion Blogger Mixer Flickr page. Enjoy!

the mixer was held at Luna Boston, which has an incredible collection of handbags to molest.

The word’s on the streets and it’s on the news…

Happy New Year, everyone! I had a great new years eve celebration. It was one of those nights where everything worked for me. The dress, hair, makeup, champagne. And the friends! They were the best part of the night.

So what did we do? We went to Beehive, a lounge in Boston’s South End. We munched on cotton candy all night and harassed the bartender into singing Happy Birthday to me. When the new year arrived, I had already switched over to water (no need to begin the new year with a hangover) and it felt like the beginning of a very good year.

So now the goods.

NYE 2009/2010 II

The dress is vintage, purchased online from Catwalk Creative Vintage’s etsy shop. When I got it, I had not idea where the hell I’d wear it, but it was the perfect antidote to the short, sparkly dresses that reign supreme on new years eve. I paired it with gold glitter eyeshadow and really wish I had gotten a picture. It looked awesome!

One of my favorite picture from the evening… Rock on dude!
