Out with the Old, In with the New

I finally replaced one of my favorite pairs of shoes: my black ankle boots. It’s bittersweet because um, hi, they are awesome looking. However, they barely survived two years (and that includes multiple repairs). I feel like boots should last way longer than two years- am I asking too much (ahem, Jeffrey Campbell)?

However, the newest members to my show family are just as awesome looking, more comfortable, and were on sale at Shopbop. Pretty much haven’t stopped wearing them since I got them.

Etsy, You Give Me a Happy

I spend a decent amount of time perusing Etsy, occasionally purchasing a little vintage shirt or some jewelry. I also spend time reading Regretsy, which never fails to make me laugh (especially the comments). Anyway, Regretsy led me to the greatest craft item ever made in the history of craftmaking. Once I saw it, I knew it had to be mine. Kind of like seeing your soul mate. Or a hot guy not wearing a wedding ring who looks like trouble.

I never saw myself owning a cross-stitch but I think you can understand the appeal. And I have to fawn over the seller, La Dorkay Vida. She made this as a custom order, responded to my emails ridiculously fast, and is both hilarious and charming. Definitely check out her store, and Dorkay Vida, if you’re reading this- I think we’d make a great duo, traveling the country and offending people together. Just you know, sleep on it.

I’m at Peace with My Lust

Rain, rain, go away. Seriously. I’m a terrible swimmer and I’m getting worried.

This dress is another one of my amazing Filene’s Basement finds (like the Lanvin skirt). It’s Acne and came to a whopping $9.99. It didn’t have a price tag but I had to have it, so I asked the staff to find price and crossed my fingers. They priced it at $40 and it was an additional 75% off. When they asked me if I still wanted it, I think I squealed in excitement. It’s pretty shapeless on its own, but I like it belted, both high on my waist and lower down.

I Call It Art

I suppose I could be considered a “bargain shopping blogger.” I believe that wearing high-quality clothing makes a person look better, especially when it comes to natural fabrics versus synthetics. And it always seems that when I want to find something basic but with interesting details, it is inevitably a designer label that achieves this. I want a wardrobe of beautiful pieces. But I want it at bargain basement prices. I get it from my mom—she taught me how to scour racks and when to wait patiently for something to be reduced even further. And to this day, when I find a great bargain, I get thrilled and want to share it with my mom.

Well, goddamn did I find a great bargain. On Saturday, Filene’s Basement had 75% off of clearance on designer pieces from Barney’s and Saks. I rifled through 6 or 7 racks stuffed with boring pants and slightly damaged dresses. And then I found a black velvet skirt. It was in excellent condition and seemed to be my size. And then I saw the tag. Lanvin. Yeah, that Lanvin. It was marked at $50. Before the 75% off. After ensuring that it was truly in great condition, I showed it to my mother and of course, we brought it home. For approximately $17. We’re still bickering over who gets to keep and if we should even keep it (the other option being selling or consigning it). But I couldn’t resist playing dress-up in it, just for a moment…

I don’t believe in owning clothes that sit in your closet and are admired but never see the light of day. Clothes are meant to be worn, especially beautiful clothes. But I cannot think of any event where I would wear this skirt. Despite that, I’m compelled to keep it. To admire the intricate closures on the side and touch the soft velvet. To maybe play dress up like this once in a while. What would you do: sell it for a few hundred bucks (hopefully) or keep it?

And just for fun, an outtake showing the athletic prowess of Calliope cat.

My Feet Want to Purr, Take 2

by a stylized hysteria on August 24, 2011

A little while back, I asked for your help in deciding between two leopard print shoes. Nearly everyone agreed that the heels rather than the sandals were a better choice. Well people, you were WRONG. These shoes hurt in a way that I have not experienced before. I’m still halfheartedly trying to break them in, but my itching for animal print hasn’t been properly satisfied yet. So, I bring you two more options that I need help deciding between.

Option 1: Kensie Girl Sila

They are very affordable (due to being faux leather). The shape looks pretty comfortable, but with the heel coming in at 4 inches, there’s definitely a potential for pain. What can I say? My feet are pussies. Hence finding cat print shoes (zing!).

Option 2: Matisse Nugent

First of all, named after Ted Nugent? Cool points have been awarded. The low wedge heel and ankle support of a bootie pretty much guarantee comfort. The pattern isn’t leopard per se, but it’s definitely some sort of animal of the cat family. These are by far the most expensive option, however.

So, what say ye? Don’t lead me wrong this time, internet. Otherwise I’m changing this blog to a poetry site dedicated to David Hasselhoff and Chuck Norris.
