I Call It Art

I suppose I could be considered a “bargain shopping blogger.” I believe that wearing high-quality clothing makes a person look better, especially when it comes to natural fabrics versus synthetics. And it always seems that when I want to find something basic but with interesting details, it is inevitably a designer label that achieves this. I want a wardrobe of beautiful pieces. But I want it at bargain basement prices. I get it from my mom—she taught me how to scour racks and when to wait patiently for something to be reduced even further. And to this day, when I find a great bargain, I get thrilled and want to share it with my mom.

Well, goddamn did I find a great bargain. On Saturday, Filene’s Basement had 75% off of clearance on designer pieces from Barney’s and Saks. I rifled through 6 or 7 racks stuffed with boring pants and slightly damaged dresses. And then I found a black velvet skirt. It was in excellent condition and seemed to be my size. And then I saw the tag. Lanvin. Yeah, that Lanvin. It was marked at $50. Before the 75% off. After ensuring that it was truly in great condition, I showed it to my mother and of course, we brought it home. For approximately $17. We’re still bickering over who gets to keep and if we should even keep it (the other option being selling or consigning it). But I couldn’t resist playing dress-up in it, just for a moment…

I don’t believe in owning clothes that sit in your closet and are admired but never see the light of day. Clothes are meant to be worn, especially beautiful clothes. But I cannot think of any event where I would wear this skirt. Despite that, I’m compelled to keep it. To admire the intricate closures on the side and touch the soft velvet. To maybe play dress up like this once in a while. What would you do: sell it for a few hundred bucks (hopefully) or keep it?

And just for fun, an outtake showing the athletic prowess of Calliope cat.

Wow, AMAZING find!  So jealous!  I might need to check out Filene’s Basement tomorrow!

I think you should definitely keep it!  It was a wonderful steal and while you might not be sure of where you will wear it in the future, I think you’ll find somewhere!  It’s just too beautiful to pass up.

You should keep it. But if it was me…I’d sell or consign it!

Definitely keep it! Knowing you, you’ll find somewhere to wear it. How about a wedding? Or some work function? Trust me, you’ll find a way to wear it. :)

I think you should keep it! You never know when you might find that perfect event to wear it to and also it would look fabulous for a holiday party…you could even hem it up a little bit for a more wearable look (even though I love it just as is).

    Great find!

    xoxo

I would keep it! One time I bought a silk strapless bustier jumpsuit (yes, you read that right) by Stella McCartney at an Intermix sample sale, despite the fact that I could not dream up any situation in which it would be appropriate. Fast forward a few months later and I wore it to a winter ball in Manhattan to great success. Of course now if you come across another super-fancy thing at a bargain price, you will have to resist. Honestly, unless it’s one of the super hot items, things don’t seem to be selling for much on eBay these days…

I think you will never have the opportunity ever in a million years to wear it, so you need to sell it immediately to me. But seriously… It’s worth keeping just to play dress up. I’m sure you’ll find an occasion. ;)

    What a find!!

You look HOT in this dress! And for $17 for a Lanvin skirt…well…it would be a crime not to purchase it. Maybe I’ll throw a cocktail party just so you can wear it? It would get cat fur all up in the train. Sigh.

As an aside, I also love the setting in which you take your photos. It looks so tropical and relaxing!

Wow, beautiful! Keep keep! Some of my favorite pieces are ones that hung in my closet for months or even years before I discovered their utility!

It’s not always the best idea to buy something just because it is designer and dealz.  My Nancy Reagan red Ferragamo blouse. . . but you should definitely keep the skirt.  It looks great on you!

gorgeous outfit and love the skirt! :)

Oh my goodness you need to keep that. You will always have the basics of any funked up gala outfit in your closet with that on hand. And the street cred of getting such a good sale. Dare you share what FB you got it at? One bargain shopper to another?

I’m always so late to reply, but I got these goodies at the Filene’s Basement in the South Shore Plaza. Apparently, it’s closing at the end of the year. The news nearly left me in tears!

  • Shanna-Marie October 12, 2011, 10:56 pm

Ok I’m seriously catching up on sooooo much from you right now and I’m dying!! This is amazing. You look stunning! What a find!! I’d tell every person I ever met about this deal lol!

  • Shanna-Marie October 12, 2011, 10:57 pm

    • A Stylized Hysteria October 13, 2011, 7:53 pm
