Over the weekend,I watched an older independent film that didn’t get much attention when it was released. Too bad, because it was pretty good. It was Harry Potter, ever heard of it? In all seriousness, until Sunday I’d never seen a single Harry Potter movie. When they were first released they didn’t appeal to me and only when the last two were released (and looked quite dark and mature) that I was interested. I figured it’s best to start at the beginning, and filled up my Netflix queue. Well, damned if that first one wasn’t completely charming and funny and totally entertaining. I guess I’m not quite as morose as I thought. Can’t wait to get through the rest of the series.

On a slightly related note, Disney is re-releasing Beauty and the Beast in theaters. Who cried a little when she saw commercials for it and heard the songs? Um, not this girl. Nope, not at all.

Grey. Again. It really is my favorite of all the neutrals. Now, let’s discuss maxi skirts. It may be unhygienic and a safety hazard, but I want my maxi skirt to cover my feet completely. I want my hem to graze the floor. And when I see a maxi skirt that stops at the ankle or (dear god) right above the ankle, I get faint. Maxi means maximum, ladies. Go for the length and the drama. Are you in the same camp as me, or do you prefer to not sweep the floor with your clothing?

Ever since seeing the Glamourai mix multiple polka dotted items, I’ve had a yearning to also cover myself in polka dots. It took me forever to find the right shirt and the right skirt and make sure the polka dots were indeed different sizes. My perseverance paid off, though, and I am happily polka dotted today. I am also mixing black and brown. So, multiple prints? Check. Black and Brown? Check. Awkward blogger pose? Check!

Or rather, fancy tights. My unofficial theme for the week has been funky tights. Dunno why, but I like it. I’ve amassed quite the collection of tights since I started blogging. Before this, I think I had black tights, black tights, and maybe a pair of navy tights. However I vaguely remember one particularly awesome outfit from high school. It was a blue sweater, denim skirt, bright pink tights, and black fishnets over the tights. I was so cool.

Even with the extra hour thanks to Daylight Saving Time, the weekend was still too short. I finally wrapped up a DIY I started weeks ago and caught up on my blog reading. And then it was Sunday evening and I got excited because even though it meant the weekend was over, my new favorite TV shows were on. Have you seen Once Upon a Time yet? It’s a fun take on classic fairy tales. And Robert Carlyle plays Rumpelstiltksin, which infinitely adds to the awesome. And there’s The Walking Dead. This season has been fantastic so far (although there could be a little more zombie carnage)!

I never thought I’d see the day, but I’m getting a little tired of shopping. My closet is full and I have plenty of options of things to wear to work, to party, to lay in bed with the cats with, to attend a black-tie affair (I did end up keeping the Lanvin skirt), and so forth. I mean, I’m still browsing online and looking at gorgeous clothing, but really…why? Of course I could find items to covet but do I need to add more to my closet? There are a few caveats, of course. I’m still desperate for a pair of (affordable) leather pants or leggings, a pair of dark denim waxed jeans, and the perfect over-the-knee boots.

One item I knocked off the list was a bright, saturated pink skirt. It’s been a journey. I searched stores. I searched ebay. I searched fabric stores in hopes of having a skirt made. Nothing was ever bright enough. Then I found it on etsy from vintage seller, Vintage Riches. It was on hold for someone else but I got lucky I was able to buy it when the first buyer fell through. Lucky me, because it fits (a little tight, but I’ll suffer) and it’s pink enough.  Seriously. It’s just as bright in real life as it is in the photos. I could not be freaking happier!

It came with a matching cape which doesn’t fit me quite as well, but I suspect it will see a second life as another type of garment. Today I paired with shades of grey to make the pink stand out even more and some neon jewelry.

I’m taking a break from my self-imposed blogging break to share my newest DIY. Seeing as I have no plans to bear children, this will likely be my most favorite and best creation.

A few weeks ago, I saw this picture.

I knew I had to try and make something similar. I spent weeks looking for a cheap pair of boots to glitterize. I found some pretty decent options, but I ended up going with a pair of new Aldo boots. Kind of goes against the DIY- ideal, but I wanted something comfy since I know I’ll end up wearing them pretty often.

There are a few different instructions for this floating around (try here or here), but the instructions are pretty damn simple. You need: boots, fine sandpaper (give your boots a quick sanding before starting), clear craft glue, and glitter. I used a coarse gold glitter and a finer orangey-rust glitter, and I also grabbed a fine-tipped glue applicator for the corners.

Oh, how the glitter flew. After letting the glue dry for a few days, I stomped around outside to get the excess glitter off. I’m not going to lie, leaving a trail of glitter when I walk is pretty much the best thing ever.

The whole project took about 40 minutes, maybe. But the need to glitter wasn’t completely out of my system and a starfish was a casualty of the glitter war. Luckily, the cats were outside for most of the day and managed to avoid my glitter-encrusted grasp. For now.

Oh, right, back to the boots. Check ‘em out, yo!

If you’re into reading fashion blogs, then you’re probably aware that this past Thursday was Fashion’s Night Out. It’s best described as an almost-holiday created to support the economy by encouraging people to come out and shop. While people were certainly out and about, I didn’t see much shopping. But I did see lots of free booze, stores open late, dj’s, live bands, photoboths, diamonds, and faux hair.

Boston really embraced FNO this year by shutting down our iconic Newbury Street to traffic and lighting the Prudential Tower pink. The chance to walk down the middle of Newbury Street, surrounded by well-dressed men, women, and the occasional dog would have been enough to make my night, but there was plenty more.

I joined a FNO Crawl, and like I said on Facebook, it’s like a pub crawl but better because there’s clothes and shopping and the champagne is free. We (led by the wonderful Boston Fashionista) started in the Copley Mall and Tiffany’s, where I tried on engagement rings. No, I’m not engaged. And even if I were, my chances of getting a Tiffany’s diamond are between slim and “more likely to be eaten alive by Mothra.” Having said that, fuck me, are those diamonds amazing. I might have to start dating up.

Tiffany’s also had a photo booth set up and we tried to answer the age old question of how many bloggers you can fit in a picture. The answer is 4 and a 1/2 but if we hadn’t been wearing such crazy shoes, it probably could’ve been 5.

The next highlight was a stop at Salon Acote, where I was able to fulfill a lifelong dream. A while back I had blue streaks in my hair, but between the relaxing, bleaching, and styling, my hair wasn’t happy. But I still wanted to try hot pink streaks. Well, the amazing staff at Salon Acote was offering free extensions through the night. I happily got 2 small clusters of deep red and a cluster of light blonde, which will be dyed hot pink tonight. I’m that much closer to becoming my childhood hero, Jem.

All Saints had a performance by Bombay Bicycle Club earlier in the night, which I’m pissed to have missed since they’re supposed to be pretty cool. But they had a flipbook station. You stand in front of a camera for 6 seconds, act silly, and 15 minutes later you get a flipbook. This was a source of much delight!

There was much more going on, including an after-party that I missed due to extreme lameness (i.e., living in the burbs with no car) but all in all, it was a great night. And I looked pretty darn adorable, if I do say so myself. Minus the greasy do.

Considering how much my feet hurt by the end of the night I am both shocked and impressed by my ability to keep my shoes on long enough to take these photos when I got home. The things I do in the name of narcissism fashion. The skirt is another find from the Stel’s sale (of the century) and every time I say pearl necklace out loud, I giggle.

Well, this isn’t my most exciting outfit, but it was a hell of a bargain! The blazer is one of my great finds from the Stel’s sale. The jeans were $9 from Gap, on sale. Yes, $9, not $10. Random. Anyway, I promise some fun outfit posts coming up soon!

I wasn’t planning to step away from my computer for so long, but the past week or so has been spent with those, um, what are they called?  Oh yeah, flesh and blood human beings. I spent Thursday and Friday on the cape, eating clam chowder, lobster rolls, oysters, and swordfish. And cake. Now it’s Monday and I’m back to reality (and the gym after all that cake). However, the good times ended early on Sunday when Calliope finally connected with her huntress heritage. She caught a bird (a really big freaking bird) and brought it into the house to show off to me. Said bird was not dead, and really not even wounded, and flew around the house for a few minutes while Calliope tried valiantly to catch it again and I stood there screaming “Calliope, don’t eat the bird! Stop!” Eventually the bird made its way out and I calmed down. But that was the first time she’s caught anything. I was kind of proud but mostly terrified out of my skull.

This outfit is from earlier last week. I haven’t worn anything remotely exciting recently, unless you count a chunk of lobster that fell on my shirt. I decided to wear some simple pieces, then throw on as much brightly colored jewelry as I could stand. Oh, the looks I got! People must have thought I’m colorblind, but I loved looking in the mirror and seeing a rainbow of colors.
