If these photos were taken at the beginning of the night, like I’d planned, my hair would be down and giant and curly and fabulous. But when you mix alcohol and a hot bar, you end up with hair pulled back (and out of my drink!). So these photos were taken at the end of the night, after champagne, abita raspberry beer, and passion fruit martinis. I think that explains the uh, quality of these photos.

It’s so hard to find the simplest things. In this case, the simplest thing is a knee-length, fitted black tank dress. I probably could have found the Calvin Klein or Narciso Rodriguez version fairly quickly, but then I’d have to doing unsavory things to afford said dress. And then, it shows up at H&M, stuffed in a rack of ugly black jumpsuits. It’s not perfect-it’s 100% cotton and stretches out way too easily. But for $30? I’ll take it!

Calliope cat is in the second photo, threatening my black outfit with her soft white fur. It’s been a little while since los gatos malos have been photographed.

When I wore this dress, I imagined people are looking at me and thinking that long dresses are so high-maintenance and so dressy for a Sunday. I find long dresses to be the simplest thing to wear when it’s warm. They’re cooler than shorts and a t-shirt and classier than a teeny dress. And sometimes Sunday needs a little drama- especially in the form of a dress flowing behind you while you walk.

I’m amazed by how short I look in this picture.
This is a very old outfit- it’s been way too hot lately for real clothes. I freakin love it.

And this is my alien-head hairdo. I’m still not sure if I like it.

These photos are from Sunday. Bet you couldn’t figure that out! I spent most of Saturday moping and when I woke up to the sun shining on Sunday, I was filled with energy. I hit SoWa market again, and even though I had less luck finding goodies I did score an italian ice, so the whole endeavor was a success. Afterwards, I bought a cute small umbrella from the Marc Jacobs store. Considering all the rain we’ve seen and my aptitude for getting caught in said rain without any sort of protection… this was the second best purchase of the weekend. The first? A handheld vacuum. Seriously, I live with two cats and a white rug. I could buy a private jet made of gold tomorrow and I’d still consider the handvac to be my best purchase of the year.
On to the fashion. Part of my moping on Saturday stemmed for trying on a bajillion pairs of shorts and deeming them all tiny pieces of masochistic hell. So on Sunday I pulled out my no-fail shorts- loose, with a longer inseam and flared leg and I felt good again.

The goods from the SoWa market?

From the past weeks that I never got around to posting.
My love for super long pants has been sated for now by these khakis. They cover my feet completely, even in high heels!

At a later date, I wore the denim dress unbuttoned over a pair of leggings to brunch, and my friends declared it my “art class smock.” As in, the giant button-down shirts you had to wear in art class during grade school. I’m very tempted to wear it with a carefully placed paint smudge on my face.

hiding among the greenery. I wore this on Tuesday to an all-day work conference. I had to look decent but it was also hot enough for birds to burst into flames in midflight. Linen and silk (even cheap linen and silk) work well for these kind of circumstances.

These are my new fab shades bought last weekend at the SoWa market from vintage seller Nicole at Fidget Finds. You know how Lucky always describes boutiques as having a “carefully edited” selection? I never really got the phrase until visiting Nicole’s booth. Everything she brought to the market was gorgeous, in great condition, and just plain cool. There was no need to rifle through ugly stuff to get to the good stuff. It was all good. Sadly, I’ve been persuaded to stick to a budget (I type that with a grimace on my face) so I left with only sunglasses. I couldn’t resist a great dress from another vintage seller, so you’ll be seeing that soon.

So how do you know you talk about your cats too much? Well, if you go to a blogger conference (more on that in another post), see a blogger you haven’t seen in months and the first thing she says to you is “You got a new cat!” Yeah, that’s a pretty good sign.
I made sure to get some photos of my accessories since they are the only bits of color in my grey, grey outfit. Love my earrings- they came to me all the from India. And my blazer? Like $25 at H&M. Perfect if you’re been experiencing sticker shock at the price of blazers elsewhere.

Part II of the unveiling of my new items. Oh hai new top and new shooz! The top is from H&M and they have a massive section devoted to T by Alexander Wang knock-offs designer-inspired pieces. The top is actually a dress that reaches about mid-thigh in the back (it’s a little too short in the front to wear as a dress) and I swear that earlier in the day I was browsing shopbop and saw the T by A.Wang version and thought “ooooooh. pretty.”

The shoes are a total impulse buy from Aldo. I went to the mall to get out of my oven-esque apartment and, well, they were begging to come home with me. I avoid Aldo normally (their shoes are not comfortable) but the low heel and ankle support makes these walkable. Do they seem vaguely reminiscent of Chloe (the clothing/shoe brand, not the cat) to you as well?

This morning I woke up with a clear vision of my outfit. A strapless yellow and grey flowered dress with light grey tights and platform sandals and maybe a belt. And then I tried it on and it was a total disaster.
Then I remembered this awesome outfit on Krystal from This Time Tomorrow. It’s a skirt, no it’s a dress! It… was completely and totally copied by me. To me, that’s the best part of this whole crazy blogging business- instant inspiration that translates to real life in a way fashion editorials never could.

Krystal, lookin’ good
I might have done better choosing another dress to try this with. The dress is short sleeved and a little loose, so it required pinning to stay on my waist. Then I had these unsightly lumps. Long story short, There’s a lot of layering going on in this outfit.
