Last night I rolled myself off the couch and headed out to my second Boston Fashion Week event, Sam Mendoza’s showing at Rocca in the South End. It was the perfect end to the weekend and the best thing to pump me up for upcoming events.

Like I said on twitter, anyone who thinks Boston isn’t stylish was proven wrong. It was absolutely packed and everyone looked great. No North Face, Patagonia, uggs, or Lily Pulitzer in sight. I was busy wrestling with my purse, jacket, camera, and glass of prosecco (yum), so I couldn’t stalk individuals for outfit pics. But imagine heels, heels, and more heels. Layered rock-n-roll silver necklaces and nature-inspired jewelry. Gorgeous afros, blondes with waves, and bangs on nearly everyone. Preppy college style taken to the next level with letterman’s jackets and cardigans. Lots of silk and patterns.

So, yeah beautiful people, beautiful clothes. And a lovely collection from Sam Mendoza. He has quite the loyal following in Boston and everyone seemed very impressed with his newest work. It was a very small collection shown my models lounging on a set, surrounded by persian rugs and bottles of champagne. The majority of the collection was beautiful gowns, but I loved the drapey tops and casual pants the most. I got a few photos of the collection with my tiny and very old point-and-shoot. Ugh. A new compact camera is the newest item on a long list of things I want to purchase. Where oh where is my sugar daddy??

I think most people assume that fashion bloggers (at least the successful ones) look fantastic even on the days they don’t share their outfit on the interwebz. But I don’t and sometimes it makes me wonder if I should be blogging. Cause, I don’t consider myself that stylish.

Style is innate. People say a stylish woman can look incredible in a white t-shirt and jeans, but I say she would never wear just a white t-shirt and jeans. Whether she’s added a load of jewelry or flashy shoes, she is able to convey her personality through her sartorial choices. It happens naturally and (I assume) it happens nearly every time she gets dressed.

I don’t post every single outfit I wear on my blog. And truthfully, when I want to do an outfit post I try to dress up. I aim to impress, ladies. And the days I don’t post? I’m likely in a basic top, cardigan, and skinny jeans. I look like every other woman out there. So in confessing this, I ask- what makes a person stylish? Is having style about dressing up every day?

These days I’ve been struggling with a clothing problem I think nearly all of us experience- How do I dress professionally for work, maintain my own style, and stay warm? The first two issues are a pain in the butt, add in layering and the possibility of snow boots and it really gets difficult.

Last week, I was breaking in my new corduroys at work. Not a big deal, except they give me plumber butt- so no appropriate for work! It would have been fine for sitting in my office all day, except my boss asked me to join a meeting at the last minute. A meeting with executives, potential donors, and her business contacts. And my demeanor illustrated my uneasiness at being in a room with smartly-dressed associates while my tattoo (and more) hung loose.

Cute, but not really work appropriate. And definitely ghetto booty tight. Uh huh.

Definitely better, I think.

I don’t really like it, but my job requires me to exude a certain level of professionalism. I hate business clothes, even business casual, but I have to wear it. So that means I have to learn to wear it while showing my personal style (whatever that is).

So here’s my attempt for today. Had to rock the high heels, because nothing makes me feel more in charge and confident than heels. Also, proper pants that cover my tattoo, bum cheeks and everything that needs to be covered. What do you think, lovely readers?

Cardigan- Rodarte for Target
Shirt- H&M (and it’s actually a knee-length dress!)
Pants- Theory
Boots- Report Signature

Listening to: “Heads Will Roll” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

This past year, I’ve been devouring everything I can find on the web relating to fashion, clothes, designers. That includes blogs, news sites, fashion show pictures, and community chat boards. As a result, my “style” has been shifting and I’ve been trying new things. Some have been pretty cool, some have um… not.

I am a reformed jcrew-aholic, lived through a (very) short stint wearing band tees and baggy jeans, and gotten over the idea that business casual is chic. Don’t you remember watching women running around in their suits and heels, looking so put-together and confident. I couldn’t wait till I had a job that required me to dress up. I wish all those chicks had told me that the jobs that go along with those clothes usually suck.

Now I’m just trying to have fun. I’m playing with different trends, wearing things that aren’t necessarily pretty, but are interesting. I’m finding that this way of dressing isn’t the norm here. Boston really has two kinds of people in the city: young professionals and college students. The college students are really casual and the young professionals are really… boring.

Do you fit in where you live? Do you care?
