Did You Know That You’re Beautiful?

I used Hurricane Irene as my cover to spend the weekend reading, napping, and poking around the interwebs. On Saturday night, I heard about the 100 Strangers Project on flickr. It’s a project for photographers that challenges them to approach 100 strangers, get their story, and then get a portrait of them. I immediately fell in love with the idea, being in need of photography practice and help being not a complete awkward mess in front of new people.

So I perused and fell a little bit in love with each person’s photograph and every story. And one in particular struck me.

Stranger #9 – Brian

“This is Brian. He loves makeup and color pink.He thinks he’s beautiful, and doesn’t care who agrees. I agree. ;)

I would love it if a stranger started a conversation with me and walked away with that impression. We should all see ourselves as beautiful, like Brian does.

I am really good at feeling sorry for myself. Right now, I’ve got a cold. Not a terrible cold, just your run-of-the-mill cold. But if you were near me, you’d swear I had ebola. I’m talking moaning, sniffling, whining. I may have even yelled at los gatos malos to make me chicken soup (cats are terrible nursemaids, by the way). What is it about whining that makes people feel better?

Anyway, these adorable pictures have managed to put a smile on my face between sneezing fits. Enjoy!

We broke but we rich at heart

I bought this dress at least a month ago, and I saved it for today. Why? It was a big day at work with an important meeting and I wanted to dress for the occasion. So after saving this dress for so long, imagine my disappointment at not receiving any comments on the dress! I mean, really! Lack of validation notwithstanding, I felt lovely in it. It swung around my legs in the wind and makes my shoulders look nice and broad.

I went to the beach on Saturday (Good Harbor on Gloucester). It was the most perfect beach day you could ever imagine. I had to take a few photos.

create images as beautiful as these. Putting aside the fact that Eva Mendes is shockingly beautiful, these photographs do an incredible job of creating a mood and a story. Maybe I should start saving up for a studio? And um… photography lessons?

Combat Salacious Removal

Saturday night and I was feelin’ alright. But honestly, my second favorite part of any night out? That precise moment when my head hits the pillow and I shut my eyes. My favorite part of any night out, is of course, getting ready!

Looking at this outfit now, I think it would have looked better with a pair of brogues or something that reached below my ankle. Guess I need to go buy some brogue now, huh?

I bought my first dslr (Nikon D60) during the summer and I’ve really been getting into photography the past few months. Which has been fun, but also incredibly, incredibly frustrating. I am not a good photographer. I have no eye for composition, I have trouble understanding lighting, and I am not that creative.  And I find myself surrounded by friends and families who have a real natural ability.  Ugh.  It’s so frustrating. But I’m going to keep trying. Things came so easy to me as a child and teenager, that I am just now learning to appreciate the feeling of succeeding after trying and trying.

Lovely readers, do you have any general tips for a burgeoning photographer? Or book recommendations?
